Corporal Cody Irby and Julie Kay Locke CPDT-KA are teaming up to share their joy of scent work and style of training in the civilian sport of scent work that has been sweeping the United States since 2008. Julie has been teaching scent work since 2011 and studied with the NACSW for over 4 years as a CNWI. Corporal Cody Irby is Julie's neighbor and began his professional K-9 career in 2012 when selected to be a K9 handler for the Pflugerville Police Department.
The activity and sport of Texas Kay9 Scent Group is designed to develop your dog’s natural scenting abilities by using their desire to hunt and their love of toys, food and exercise. It’s a phenomenal way for your dog to have fun, build confidence, overcome environmental challenges, and use more critical thinking while burning lots of mental and physical energy. It all starts with a box!
If you want to move into competing with your dog you will want to be in this class. We repeat a lot of what you learned in Introduction to Kay9 Scent Group, but we use birch odor to start. In this class we refine your leash work, your reading of the dog, reward timing, , hide placement, and we heighten the communication between you and your dog! Anise and clove odors are introduce as each dog progresses into multiple hides.
After you have completed Introduction to Texas Kay9 Scent Group and Introduction to Odor you may move into this class where we get element specific. You will learn how to search vehicles and exteriors as well as expand into different containers and more interiors. You are still using birch odor for this class. We will refine your approach to the search area, how to work up and down wind, and more!
This class is for up and coming competition teams who are ready to enter their first novice trial. We will based each class on supporting each team as they need to prepare. You will track your locations and watch several dogs worked the same problem and how odor will change throughout the day per element. Officer Irby will be helping Julie lead these classes.
